Muk Yan Jong Wooden Dummy

The Muk Yan Jong (Wing Chun wooden dummy) is in many ways the hallmark of Wing Chun training.

It is an important key to a practitioner's ability.

Traditionally, the Wing Chun practitioner starts with the Siu Lim Tao (1st form/little idea) followed by the Cham Kiu (2nd form/bridge arms). The student then learns the Muk Yan Jong (wooden dummy form). The wooden dummy form combines the hand techniques of the 1st form with the techniques (turns, steps, kicks) from the 2nd form. He then begins partner work (implementing the form on the partner/implementing what he has learned into Chi Sao). This order is important for understanding Wing Chun! It is not enough to just memorize a sequence on the dummy. The practitioner must know exactly what he is doing, just as in the previously learned forms. Every movement has a meaning and must be reflected in its Chi Sao.
